Manchester United‘s winger, Alejandro Garnacho, may potentially face disciplinary action from the Football Association (FA) due to a social media post directed at his teammate Andre Onana, and Mark Goldbridge terms this as “Ridiculous.

This post has stirred controversy, with some expressing their discontent, including Mark Goldbridge.

The background to this issue revolves around a recent Champions League match between Manchester United and FC Copenhagen. In the game, goalkeeper Onana made a crucial save, preserving their victory.

In response, Garnacho posted a picture on social media, featuring Onana celebrating with his teammates.

However, he included two gorilla emojis above the image, which raised concerns about potential racial connotations. Upon realizing this, Garnacho promptly removed the post.

Onana, in a show of support, defended Garnacho’s intentions, stating that he understood the emojis were meant to symbolize power and strength and did not find them offensive.

Reports have emerged suggesting that the FA might consider banning Garnacho over the social media post.

Comparisons have been drawn to previous cases like Edinson Cavani receiving a three-match ban in 2020 for his response to a fan while at United and Man City’s Bernardo Silva receiving a one-match suspension in 2019 for an “aggravated breach” of the FA’s code of conduct.

Mark Goldbridge, a prominent figure associated with The United Stand, strongly criticized the potential ban for Garnacho, deeming it “ridiculous” and a “disgrace.”

Goldbridge emphasized saying,

“This is the world we live in now – anyone can be offended by anything even when the intention was very, very clear. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.

Why did he delete it? Because if he leaves it up, you get loads of people accusing him of being racist when that wasn’t the intention – you have to take it down. I think it’s ridiculous to say why did he delete it.

Onana doesn’t perceive it to be racist. Anyone with a brain doesn’t perceive it to be racist, so why can’t the FA grow a pair and say clearly it’s not racist, it’s not meant to be racist, and therefore, we’re just going to move on.

Now people would compare it to Bernardo Silva, but what he did was just massively naive and silly. This is not massively naive and silly, there’s just no awareness that it could cause a problem. I think it’s a disgrace, if he gets a ban for that it’s an absolute disgrace.”
