Ruben Amorim‘s first year at Manchester United have not gone to plan.
Last season’s 15th finish in the Premier League and now two league defeats in the first four games and a Carabao Cup exit have left the Red Devils staring at their worst start in more than three decades.
For a fanbase already worn down by years of false dawns, patience is running thin.
The Portuguese coach was hired to steady the ship after United’s disastrous 2024/25 season, which ended without European football.
The hope was simple: with fewer games, Amorim could build a stronger system and get more from the squad.
But that has not happened yet. And with rivals like Spurs under Thomas Frank hitting the ground running, United’s slow start feels even harder to accept.

‘Things can change very quickly’
Reporter Ben Jacobs offered insight on the manager’s current position.
Speaking to The United Stand, he said: “The feeling within Manchester United is still to back Ruben Amorim, so he has that board support, but it’s Manchester United, and if you have 3 or 4 bad games in a row, things can obviously change very quickly.”
Jacobs added that United chiefs believe they have built a team capable of at least qualifying for Europe: “Their best-case scenario is to contend for the top four or top five and the Champions League.”
That line feels telling. United’s hierarchy seem willing to give Amorim time, but their expectations are clear. If results do not improve before the festive run, pressure will pile on.

What Man Utd fans want?
Supporters are already voicing strong opinions. Many on social media have called for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be reinstated, claiming he was unfairly dismissed back in 2021.
Some even shared screenshots of his unbeaten runs and high-scoring wins as proof. One post read ( @UTDMaI): “Getting rid of Ole Gunnar Solskjær for whoever was the biggest mistake we ever made as a club.”
Others echoed similar thoughts, pointing out the “most enjoyable football” since Sir Alex Ferguson came under the Norwegian.
Even pundit Jamie O’Hara joined the chorus, saying on talkSPORT: “This is the worst Man United team I’ve seen…get Ole back in.”
The board, however, reportedly has different names in mind. Mauricio Pochettino, Gareth Southgate, Oliver Glasner and Marco Silva have all been linked. Solskjaer is not believed to be on the shortlist.
Time is ticking for Ruben Amorim
Amorim is safe for now, but the October international break looms as a natural checkpoint. If results remain poor, the club may be forced into another change.
For a manager brought in to end chaos, the pressure could soon become overwhelming.
