Man Utd branded ‘criminal’ for what they did in summer transfer window

Manchester United’s busy summer window was meant to be a turning point. Instead, it has sparked anger from club legend Paul Scholes, who called the business a “criminal offence.”

Despite spending more than £200m, the Red Devils sit 14th in the Premier League and have already been dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby.

Man Utd brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens and others. But results have not matched the investment.

The 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City only poured more fuel on the debate.

The one player Man Utd should have signed as per Paul Scholes

The biggest frustration for Scholes was the failure to move for Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian left Paris Saint-Germain after being made available, only for City to swoop in late on deadline day.

Scholes told the BBC Football Daily podcast: “If Man United were not in the market for Donnarumma when he became available, that’s a criminal offence for me.”

He went on to say: “We can buy a keeper here for £35m to £40m who we’ve got for the next 10 years… he could be easily the best goalkeeper in the world. He reminds me of Peter Schmeichel.”

Instead, United signed Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who has yet to convince.

Scholes was blunt on The Good, The Bad & The Football Podcast: “It (the fee) tells me he’s not a top goalkeeper. And if he is, he’s straight into the big game.”

United’s recruitment has left fans and pundits scratching their heads. Scholes believes the lack of a top goalkeeper signing will haunt Amorim’s side for the season ahead.
