Spanish-double-winning striker with Barcelona, Martin Braithwaite has been linked to a surprise move to Man Utd this January, with Erik ten Hag yet to make a single significant signing this year.

Martin Braithwaite linked to Man Utd move

Man Utd are reportedly looking at signing Espanyol striker, Martin Braithwaite, according to HITC – with Erik ten Hag’s search for a striker being no secret this January.

The Red Devils have already sniffed around for Karim Benzema, Jonathan David, and Victor Gyokeres – none of them proving to be viable signings for this January.

Man Utd have reportedly been offered to sign the 32-year-old Danish striker in a last-ditch effort amidst a difficult January window, for as little as £5m.

Braithwaite is the Spanish Second Division’s top scorer, enjoying a successful campaign with Espanyol with 11 goals in 21 appearances.

Braithwaite could be a practical signing

Martin Braithwaite, born on June 5, 1991, in Esbjerg, Denmark, began his career at Esbjerg fB in 2007, before moving to Toulouse in 2009.

After two seasons in France, he joined Brøndby IF in 2013, where he won the Danish Superliga in 2014. In 2017, he moved to Middlesbrough in England, before joining Leganés in Spain in 2018. In 2020, he signed for Barcelona.

The Dane then signed for Espanyol after leaving Barcelona as a free agent in 2022, penning a deal running till June 2025 – that includes a release clause for £5m.

Braithwaite has represented Denmark at various youth levels and made his senior debut in 2013. He has since earned over 50 caps for his country and was part of the Denmark squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2020 European Championship.

Braithwaite is known for his pace, dribbling, and finishing ability. He is also a versatile player who can play in a variety of attacking positions.

Despite the Dane’s older age and the calibre of football he currently plays, the move to sign the striker might turn out to be shrewd, as Braithwaite has been called upon by the likes of Euros semi-finalists Denmark and Barcelona’s double-winning side in the 2021-2022 season.

As it has turned out, options for new signings are few and far between this January. Man Utd may have no other choice, especially since their only remaining backup striker – Anthony Martial, is currently out for a spell on the sidelines with an injury.
