Manchester derby boost could create big problem for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United head into the derby with an unexpected lift.

The international break has given Ruben Amorim the gift of time, and two of his key players — Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount — are reportedly close to full fitness.

On the surface, that looks like the perfect scenario for United before facing City. But in truth, it could hand Amorim a real headache.

Cunha’s recovery appears further along, and his presence would be a huge boost. The Brazilian looked sharp before hobbling off against Burnley and has hinted online that he might be ready for Sunday.

Few players in Amorim’s squad bring the same fight and directness, and his style feels tailor-made for a derby where every inch matters. If he is fit, it is almost impossible to leave him out.

The Mount dilemma ahead of Manchester derby

The bigger issue lies with Mason Mount. His form has been steady, his pressing admired, but his place in the lineup comes at a cost.

Starting him often forces Amorim into reshuffling his front line, usually at the expense of Benjamin Sesko. That is a tough trade-off.

Sesko, full of confidence after scoring for Slovenia, offers a cutting edge that United cannot afford to waste against City.

Mount’s energy could still be crucial — but perhaps from the bench. His legs against tired defenders might prove more effective than asking him to start in a system already struggling for balance.

It is less about his performance level and more about what United need in this specific match.

Derbies demand bold calls, and Amorim has shown ruthlessness in the transfer market. Now he may need to apply the same steel to his team sheet.

Dropping Mount would not be popular, but it could be the move that gives United their best chance at silencing the Etihad.
