Manchester United loanee stars in dramatic 2-2 draw with Barcelona on first La Liga start

Alvaro Fernandez vs Barcelona

Alvaro Fernandez, a Manchester United defender on loan to Granada, made his La Liga starting debut against Barcelona after an impressive performance off the bench the previous week.

The former Real Madrid academy graduate was tasked with playing as a left wing-back and had a successful outing.

During his 60 minutes on the pitch, Fernandez helped Granada secure a point in a match where they initially led 2-0 before Barcelona pulled one back just before halftime.

Despite Barcelona’s late equalizer in the 85th minute, Granada managed to hold on and avoid a late comeback.

Fernandez earned praise from journalist Sam Tighe, who noted his tenacity in challenges and ball duels, as well as his skillful turns and swivels.

Did Erik Ten Hag made the right call in loaning out Alvaro Fernandez

In the game, the Manchester United loanee completed two successful dribbles, won one tackle, made two interceptions, and had seven ball recoveries.

Manchester United’s decision to loan out Fernandez was based on manager Erik ten Hag‘s belief that he wasn’t ready to start for the club.

Instead, they signed Sergio Reguilon as cover for injured left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

However, Reguilon’s recent injury has raised questions about this decision, especially given Fernandez’s impressive performance against Barcelona.

Some may argue that if Fernandez is capable of starting against a team like Barcelona, then Manchester United might have benefited from having him in their squad.

Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to Bramall Lane after the international break as they face the team at the bottom of the table Sheffield United
