Ronaldo record broken: Ex Man United man has 18 goals in 14 European games

Romelu Lukaku breaks Ronaldo's record

Former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku continues to maintain an exceptional record in European competition, as he once again found the back of the net for Jose Mourinho’s Roma on Thursday night.

Lukaku, often a divisive and opinion-splitting center-forward, boasts a truly remarkable Europa League record.

He scored in the 2-0 victory over Slavia Prague at the Stadio Olimpico, extending his streak to 14 consecutive Europa League games with 18 goals during that period.

Romelu Lukaku breaks Cristiano Ronaldo’s record

In European football, no player is currently enjoying a longer unbroken streak in UEFA competition. Even Cristiano Ronaldo, who also had a stint with Manchester United, reached a streak of 11 back in 2018.

Lukaku’s incredible record spans nine years and involves three different clubs. It all began with a hat-trick for Everton in a 4-1 away victory against BSC Young Boys during Roberto Martinez’s tenure in 2015.

Despite his impressive record, Lukaku has yet to lift the Europa League trophy. However, he was named the Player of the Season in the 2019/20 tournament, playing a crucial role in taking Inter Milan to the final, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to specialists Sevilla.

Lukaku under Jose Mourinho with Roma

Following a challenging second stint at Chelsea, Lukaku has experienced a revival under his former Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, in the Italian capital.

His recent goal against Slavia Prague marked his eighth goal in just ten appearances for Roma.

Mourinho, who has a reputation for collecting silverware, has brought out the best in Lukaku once more. The Belgian striker appears content and motivated in Rome, feeling valued and wanted by the team.

“I found him happy. Romelu needs to be happy, to feel loved and wanted,”

Mourinho told DAZN a few weeks ago.

With Lukaku’s exceptional form in the Europa League and Mourinho’s track record for winning trophies, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Roma, who lost to Sevilla in the final last season, going a step further and potentially claiming the title in 2024.
