Ten Hag’s Potential Magic: Saving Manchester United Millions in Transfers

Amad Diallo to Manchester United

After a tough end to 2023, Manchester United will be hoping a win against Wigan in the first game of 2024 represents a sign of things to come.

On Monday, Ten Hag’s team is set to face the Latics in the FA Cup, presenting a prime chance for Amad to leave a lasting impression on the squad.

The Ivory Coast youngster made a comeback to the team last week following an injury he sustained during pre-season.

Despite Manchester United’s challenges this season, their overall quality should be sufficient to triumph over Wigan, who are currently struggling in League One.

This match could serve as the launching pad Amad needs to demonstrate his capabilities on the right side of United’s attack and make a favourable impression on Ten Hag.

Amad Diallo after joining Manchester United

Since joining United, the young winger has encountered challenges in securing regular playing time, and his loan spell at Rangers didn’t provide strong indications of readiness for a significant impact at Old Trafford.

Nevertheless, his temporary move to Sunderland last season offered United fans a glimpse of the player the club initially believed they had acquired from Atalanta.

Amad scored 14 goals in all competitions, earning praise from fans and pundits for his classy displays. Despite only being 21, the forward has made no secret of his desire to make the grade at United.

Former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray said of the youngster back in April:

“He’s an amazing footballer. The game is so easy for him. Individually, he is superb.”

Amad kept Sunderland fans eagerly anticipating his moves last season, and now, he seems poised to seize the opportunity he has been anticipating at United.

Marcus Rashford is grappling with a dip in form after his impressive 30-goal performance for United last season, Rasmus Hojlund is still adjusting to English football, and Antony has yet to justify the substantial fee United invested in him.

The Red Devils‘ forward line has faced challenges this season, leaving fans anxious for the club to make a move in the transfer market.

The right-wing position has been a persistent concern for years, despite the club investing a substantial amount in wingers.

While the opportunity for Amad to showcase his skills against Wigan may not conclusively demonstrate his readiness for a central role at United—given his successful loan stint with Sunderland against lower-league opponents—it could instil the confidence in Ten Hag to provide him with a Premier League chance.

If he takes that chance with both hands then United might not need to buy a new right winger after all.
