Ten Hag’s ‘U-Turn’ Provides a ‘Lifeline’ for £50m Star at Old Trafford

Manchester United: Scott McTominay and Fred

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag considers Scott McTominay as the future following Fred’s potential departure.

In recent developments at Old Trafford, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag appears to have made a surprising “U-turn” regarding the future of Scott McTominay.

Transfer insider Dean Jones, in an exclusive interview with GIVEMESPORT, revealed that the club is now open to selling fellow midfielder Fred, potentially giving McTominay a lifeline at the club.

Amidst United’s ongoing pursuit of strengthening their midfield, which saw the recent acquisition of Mason Mount, McTominay’s playing time has suffered.

Diminished Playing Time for Scott McTominay and Transfer Speculation of Manchester United

Last summer, the arrivals of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen further diminished McTominay’s chances of securing regular minutes on the field.

Speculation had emerged that United might be willing to offload the 26-year-old, with Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United and Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic showing interest in acquiring his services.

However, the latest information suggests a shift in the club’s stance.

Jones comments about the situation

Jones stated,

“There seems like there might have been a little bit of a U-turn on McTominay and he might have a lifeline at Man United now.

And it’s Fred is the one that they’re more open to, but I don’t think they really need to lose both of those players. But we’ll have to see how that situation plays out for determining whether they go for anybody else.”

Despite the potential reprieve, McTominay’s prospects of regular game time in the 20-time Premier League champions remain uncertain.

With Mason Mount’s arrival and other midfield options at the club, the Scotland international could continue to struggle for minutes on the pitch.

Having made 31 appearances across all competitions in the 2022/23 season, McTominay only managed to score two goals.

With his market value estimated at £50 million, McTominay may need to explore opportunities at other clubs to take his career to the next level.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Manchester United will sell both Fred and McTominay or retain the latter in their squad.
