Wayne Rooney to become next Birmingham manager

Former Manchester United star forward Wayne Rooney has officially taken on the role of manager for Birmingham City, a Championship side in English football.

This announcement comes after Rooney departed from his managerial position at Major League Soccer (MLS) club DC United.

Birmingham City confirmed the appointment on Thursday, stating that Rooney has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract and will assume his duties immediately.

Ashley Cole and John O’Shea will continue to hold their coaching positions with their respective national teams while working alongside Rooney in his coaching staff.

Wayne Rooney comments after new Birmingham job

In response to his new role, Wayne Rooney expressed his excitement, saying,

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Birmingham City Football Club at such an exciting time. It is very clear that they have a plan and are committed to realising their ambition for the club. We are fully aligned on what is expected. I have been building my managerial career, putting myself in challenging environments, to get me ready for this opportunity. It’s a project that gives me a sense of purpose and I can’t wait to get started.

We have some exciting young players in the squad, and some who are still to break through into the First Team, alongside a core of experienced senior professionals. I have a clear way that I want the team to play, and my coaching staff and I will work hard to implement it. We will create a winning culture here with an identity that gets Blues fans on their feet.”

Rooney, who has played at St. Andrew’s (Birmingham City’s home stadium) in the past, acknowledged the passionate and vocal support of the club’s fans.

He now looks forward to experiencing that support from the managerial side and expressed his commitment to elevating the club to higher levels while meeting the high expectations.

Reportedly (Source: The Sun), Wayne Rooney’s annual salary at Birmingham City will be £1.5 million, a substantial increase compared to the previous boss, John Eustace, whose salary was significantly lower.
